That is what this character (as well as Richard III and Macbeth, I might add) experience. Like whenever you're a child and you were put to bed early, and it was dark and you tried to make yourself go to sleep, but you can never do that. It all takes place in the consciousness of the speaker while he's "staring at a woman on the corner." He's lying awake at night, all alone, and he's confronted with the gravity of his own being. While this whole song kicks fucking ass, the first and last verses stand out to me. The best way to ruin any character is to get too much into "the story behind it all." The Geto Boys don't say, and that's smart. But then again there could be a million reasons a dealer/gangster/whatever would be paranoid and anxious. General CommentI can see that perhaps the narrative is from the perspective of a dealer who has started snorting his profits (and he's in deep guano now), which doubtless could bring on such paranoia. My hands were all bloody, from punching on the concrete Then he disappeared and my boys disappeared too Now that's the nigga I'd be seeing in my sleep So I swung and hit the nigga in his mouth Took a look back and he was right before our face I feel like I'm the one that's doing dopeĬan't keep a steady hand because I'm nervousĪnd trying to find an exit out the businessīut yet and still it's hard for me to feel happyĪnd then I'm worry-free, but that's bullshitĪnd if I died then my child would be a bastardīut to me it seemed like she was down to get me I keep looking over my shoulder and peeping around corners I take my boys everywhere I go because I'm paranoid Three blind, crippled and crazy senior citizens What I saw'll make your ass start giggling I got my hand on the motherfucking trigger
If it's going down let's get this shit over with Hooked a left into Popeye's and bailed out quick Reached under my seat, grabbed my popper for the suckers Thought he had caine but it was Gold Medal flour Or is it the one I beat for five thousand dollars Or is it that nigga last week that I shot I feel I'm being tailed by the same sucker's headlights It's fucked up when your mind's playing tricks on ya I'm popping in the clip when the wind blowsĮvery twenty seconds got me peeping out my window
When I awake I don't see the motherfuckerīut fuck that shit, there's a nigga trying to kill me I can see him when I'm deep in the covers I start sweating and blood starts coming out my noseīut I don't know who it is so I'm watching my back My mother's always stressin' I ain't living right I'm paranoid, sleeping with my finger on the trigger Let me drop some shit like this here, real smoothĬandlesticks in the dark, visions of bodies being burned Scarface’s grandmother was reportedly mumbling to herself, and when asked, “‘Mama, what you talkin’ about?'” replied, “‘Oh, nothing, my mind’s just playing tricks on me'”.I sit alone in my four-cornered room staring at candles On an episode of Yo! MTV Raps: Classic Cuts, Scarface and his grandmother spoke about how she inspired the track “Mind Playing Tricks on Me”. However, the Geto Boys’ label, Rap-A-Lot Records, decided that the record would be more valuable as a breakout single for the group. The song was originally intended for a Scarface solo album as he penned three of the song’s four verses. At the song’s peak, it reached 23 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the highest-charting single by the Geto Boys. The song samples “Hung Up On My Baby” by Isaac Hayes, from his 1974 film Tough Guys. The lyrics describe the mental anguish and exhaust of life as a gangster, including dealing with symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder, paranoia, suicidal ideation, and loneliness. Mind Playing Tricks On Me is a single by the Geto Boys, featured on their 1991 album We Can’t Be Stopped.
